Historic NW Portland Beauty next to Wallace Park

3 hours
Located on the corner of NW 25th and Pettygrove overlooking Wallace Park, this spectacular 1909 home has been lovingly restored and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Bringing back the days of grandeur, where craftsmanship was paramount and downtown accessibility a necessity, the "Christine Becker House" gives residents a rare lifestyle, even by Portland standards. A mix of urban and classic, this home is a grand sanctuary amid the vibrant Northwest Portland neighborhood of streetcars, restaurants, parks, theaters, shopping, coffee and much more. Located within walking distance of the beloved restaurant rows of 21st and 23rd Avenues, and Slabtown, including St Jack's, Bar Diane, Serratto, Breakside Brewery, Pine State, G-Love, Bamboo Sushi, Joe Bar, Papa Haydn, Santa Fe Taqueria, Afuri, Killer Burger, St Honore Bakery, Salt & Straw and many more.

Conveniently located near many grocery stores including New Seasons, Trader Joes, Food Front, Fred Meyer's, and Zupan's. Dream location for nature lovers, a few minutes to many nature trails of Forest Park, Macleay Park, Rose Garden and Japanese Garden.

Wallace Park next to the home has tennis courts, a turf field, a baseball field, basketball courts and two playgrounds. Next to the park is Chapman Elementary School and Lincoln High School is nearby. There is a streetcar stop just a few blocks away- you can be in the Pearl District in 7 minutes and downtown in 10 minutes.

A real treat is the Swifts migration down to South America after roosting in the Chapman school across the street: http://www.kptv.com/story/15461297/swifts-return-to-chapman-school-in-nw-portland

The home itself is a mix of classic with some modern touches. The beautiful front porch leads to a grand entryway that faces a beautiful staircase and leads to the living room on one side and the dining room on the other. The mahogany paneled dining room is classic 1909 with an abundance of woodwork and plenty of built-ins. The living room has a large fireplace and detailed columns that lead to a quiet room with a private porch; this room has been used as an office and a library. The kitchen has been redesigned in a manner that maintains the original style yet offers all modern conveniences. There is a breakfast nook, eating bar and a butler's pantry. The upstairs bedrooms surround a large landing. The classic bathroom with subway and octagon tile is shared with three of the bedrooms and the master suite has a stunning new contemporary bathroom. The finished basement with a full bathroom and a separate entrance is a great multi-purpose space that provides flexibility to use as an in-law suite, guest room or family and entertainment room.

The luscious, private gardens offer generous outdoor spaces with a hot tub, 2 car garage and long driveway, with plenty of space for gardening and entertaining.

Here is the historical information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine_Becker_House

The 1909 Christine Becker House located in Northwest Portland is a two story Colonial Revival style single family dwelling.

The dominant feature of the Becker residence is a side-facing gambrel roof, inspired by the Dutch Colonial buildings of the northeast, which extends to enclose a porch on the front elevation. The porch is supported by massive columns. The Becker residence incorporates classical elements of the Colonial Revival style as well as those of the Craftsman style and is considered locally and historically significant as a truly outstanding example of the work of noted Portland architect Emil Schacht and a rare example of the Dutch Colonial style within northwest Portland.

Shortly after its completion, the Becker house was featured in the September 1910 issue of the "Northwest Architect". The Christine Becker House is one of only two residential designs known to have enjoyed such publication during Schacht's lifetime.
